How to install and activate an eSIM on iPhone, Samsung, and Android
Follow clear step-by-step instructions to install your travel eSIM, choose the right data line, and connect when you arrive at your destination.
Before you start
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- Keep your QR code or manual activation details open.
- Install before travel, then activate data after arrival.
The safe setup flow
Install the eSIM while you still have reliable internet. Do not remove your primary SIM. When you reach your destination, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line if your plan requires it.
Install the eSIM profile
Scan the QR code or enter the manual details from your order email while connected to Wi-Fi.
Activate mobile data
At your destination, set the eSIM as the mobile data line and keep your main number for calls if needed.
iPhone
How to install an eSIM on iPhone
For iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models, you can add an eSIM from Settings, Camera, a QR code in email, or manual details.
- Open SettingsGo to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Add eSIMTap Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular, then choose Use QR Code.
- Scan your QR codePoint the camera at the QR code from your TrilaeSIM order email and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Label the lineName the new line Travel, TrilaeSIM, or the destination name so you can recognize it later.
- Choose data lineWhen you arrive, select the eSIM as Mobile Data and turn on Data Roaming for that eSIM line if required.
If your QR code is inside your iPhone email
On recent iOS versions, tap and hold the QR code in your email or browser, then choose Add eSIM. If that option is not available, open the QR code on another screen and scan it with your iPhone.

How to install an eSIM on Samsung
Most compatible Samsung Galaxy phones let you add an eSIM from SIM manager using a carrier QR code.
- Open SettingsGo to Settings > Connections > SIM manager.

After installation: activate the right line

If your eSIM does not connect
- Check that the eSIM line is turned on.
- Confirm mobile data is using the eSIM line.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off.
- Restart your phone and try again.

Common eSIM installation questions
Should I install my eSIM before traveling?
Yes. Install the eSIM while you have stable Wi-Fi. Activate mobile data on the eSIM only when you arrive, unless your plan instructions say otherwise.
Can I keep my normal SIM active?
Yes. Most phones let you keep your regular SIM for calls and SMS while using the travel eSIM for mobile data.
Do I need data roaming on?
Many travel eSIM plans require data roaming on for the eSIM line. Keep roaming off on your primary SIM if you want to avoid carrier roaming charges.
Can I scan the QR code from the same phone?
If your phone cannot scan a QR code shown on its own screen, open the QR code on another device or enter the activation details manually.
